The 2020 Kerala Gold Smuggling Case
Customs intercepted 30 kg of gold hidden in a UAE consulate diplomatic bag at Thiruvananthapuram airport, unravelling a smuggling network and, briefly, allegations reaching Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office through a suspended aide. The Reality
Customs officials detained a diplomatic baggage addressed to the UAE consulate at Thiruvananthapuram airport on 30 June 2020 and, on opening it on 5 July 2020, found approximately 30 kg of 24-carat gold worth ₹14.82 crore concealed inside bathroom fittings. The NIA registered a case under the UAPA on 10 July 2020 against Sarith Kumar, Swapna Suresh, Fazil Fareed and Sandeep Nair; the ED separately pursued a money-laundering angle. M. Sivasankar, then principal secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, was suspended and removed from his posts after his links to Swapna Suresh emerged, and the Congress-led opposition demanded the Chief Minister's resignation, alleging his office's involvement — an allegation the CPI(M) government has denied, and for which no court has found the Chief Minister culpable. Most of the key accused, including Swapna Suresh, were granted bail by late 2020/2021 across the various cases against them (NIA/UAPA, customs and ED/PMLA). In 2022, Swapna Suresh made fresh, contested allegations that she and Sandeep Nair had been pressured by the ED to falsely implicate the Chief Minister; those claims led the Kerala government to set up a judicial commission to examine the ED's conduct, which the Kerala High Court has stayed following legal challenges. As of publication, the underlying smuggling and money-laundering cases remain under trial, with no final conviction reported for the core smuggling charges.
