The Reality
Investigators alleged a large-scale network involving impersonation of candidates, manipulated seating arrangements, and bribery, estimated to have involved over ₹2,000 crore in payments. Roughly 2,000 people were arrested, with chargesheets naming hundreds of candidates, guardians, invigilators, and middlemen. A special CBI court sentenced 11 people to seven years' imprisonment in one set of convictions; other individual cases have also resulted in convictions. The Supreme Court transferred the investigation to the CBI in 2015 after a series of deaths among accused and witnesses drew national attention, though the exact number and causes of those deaths remain disputed, with estimates for deaths connected to the case ranging from around 25 to over 40.
